Mercedes relief over modified tyres

Mercedes on Wednesday reacted relieved to Pirelli's announcement that they will bring modified tyres to the weekend German Formula One Grand Prix. "There is big relief," Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff told a conference call Wednesday. "Sometimes it takes dramatic incidents to make everyone pull together. Formula One must show unity." Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was the first of four drivers at Sunday's British Grand Prix to suffer a left rear tyre blow-out. Pirelli named several factors beyond their control as the reason for the incidents but also pledged to bring modified tyres to Germany, and a new range of rubbers to the following race in Hungary.
