Mercedes on top in practice but Alonso threat looming

Lewis Hamilton was the quickest driver at the end of the practice sessions for the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday but Mercedes is struggling with tyre wear and that could provide the upper hand to its rivals. Fernando Alonso, who had topped opening practice, split the Mercedes duo in second place with the Ferrari driver best placed to pounce on Mercedes should an opportunity arise. Hamilton topped the times despite struggling with set up the entire day. Nico Rosberg was third, four-tenths off the pace, ahead of the Red Bull pair of Daniel Ricciardo and Sebastian Vettel, who was 0.7 seconds slower than the top time.
