The Brazilian was the first driver to break into the 1min 27secs bracket in his Sauber, improving his benchmark to 1min 27.307secs shortly afterwards to ensure it was his name at the top as the chequered flag fell for an hour's break. He was just five hundredths quicker than Daniel Ricciardo, who made up for missing much of the morning in the pit lane by proving quick when he did eventually emerge in the Red Bull.
