McLaren escapes penalty for qualifying error

Fernando Alonso will be allowed to keep his 17th place start for the British Grand Prix despite the discovery he had run one of Jenson Button's tyres in qualifying. The Spaniard was put under investigation after McLaren was found out to have accidentally used the wrong tyres on his car during qualifying at Silverstone, with a potential penalty that could have landed him a demotion to the back of the grid. Blaming a 'communication error' for the mistake, stewards accepted the error and opted to give McLaren a reprimand, meaning Alonso will still start 17th alongside his team-mate in 18th.
