Rosberg tops FP1 despite early mechanical scare

Nico Rosberg led a Mercedes AMG PETRONAS 1-2 in first practice at Spa-Francorchamps despite an early scare when the German driver appeared to lose power heading into Blanchimont and cruised back to the pits. Rosberg was able to resume running later in the session, and set a best time of 1m51.082s, 0.242s clear of team-mate and current championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo was an impressive third for the Renault-powered Infiniti Red Bull Racing team, ahead of Spa specialist Kimi Raikkonen, a four-time winner at the circuit, and the Finn’s Scuderia Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel, while the second Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat was sixth.
