Lewis Hamilton sets rapid pace in Austria FP1

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton controlled proceedings during the opening free practice session by setting the quickest ever lap at the Red Bull Ring. Hamilton, equipped with the yellow-ringed Soft tyres, clocked a lap of 1:05.975 to finish comfortably clear of the opposition during the first 90-minute session for the Austrian Grand Prix. Hamilton’s time was 0.190s quicker than Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who escaped a brush with the wall after running through the gravel at Turn 7 early on. Hamilton’s primary opponents all recorded their quickest laps on the Supersoft compound, with Verstappen’s time coming during the closing stages, enabling him to split the Mercedes...
