Charles Leclerc fastest as Ferrari lays down marker

Charles Leclerc provided a glimpse of Ferrari’s potential as he surged to the top spot during the penultimate morning of Formula 1 pre-season testing. After ex-GP3 rival Alexander Albon became the first driver to break into the 1:16s this year at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Leclerc set a series of rapid times on Pirelli’s C5 tyres. Leclerc gradually lowered the benchmark before winding up with a 1:16.231 – within six-hundredths of the overall circuit record, set by Lewis Hamilton at last year’s Spanish Grand Prix. Albon wound up second for Toro Rosso, while early pacesetter Lando Norris (McLaren) and close pursuant Pierre Gasly (Red Bull) also set times...
