The drivers may be the personalities idolised around the world, but for the thinking person’s F1 fan it is arguably the team principal that has the most challenging role of all. As the team head, you are the person to steer them through tough times, be the first to sing praises of everyone when everything is going right, stop your drivers swinging for one another when they clash in a race and be the central pillar from which everything else revolves. So, while team principals may not be the glamorous face of F1 (though Flavio Briatore came pretty close…), a team’s success or failure is very much judged against them (sorry, Paddy Lowe).
